MGO IN TURKEY AND BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA : UUM SEEKING OPPORTUNITY TO SPREAD ITS WING TO EUROPE

The Malaysia Global Outreach (MGO) program took a major leap of faith by venturing into new markets.  Europe was the latest destination of choice and two countries were visited namely, Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

This program is one of the programs organized by the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) through MyAlumni Cluster.  It is tasked with developing programs and activities that can secure and enhance the long term alumni relations at the international level.  The working group is chaired by Prof. Dr. Mansor Abu Talib, of Universiti Putra Malaysia and its board members consists of the directors of alumni centers of all public and selected private universities.  Universiti Utara Malaysia is represented by Dr. Halim Mad Lazim, the Direcotr of Alumni UUM.  The program provides a platform for these universities to promote continuous and lifelong educational opportunities to international students.  It also promotes other activities such as the student mobility program, visiting lecturer and staff exchange programs, as well as offers of grants for research and development activities.

The MGO entourage first stopover was as Turkey, on the 18 April 2015.  The event in Turkey was held at Point Hotel Barbaros, Istanbul.  The Malaysian Ambassador, His Excellency Dato’ Amran Mohamed Zin was present to inaugurate this momentous event.  In attendance was also the MATRADE officials and the Malaysian Tourism attaches.

The gathering was even more meaningful when it was also attended by the Turkish alumni.  The delegation then made several visits to renowned universities around Istanbul.  Among the universities visited was the University of Bahsecehir, where the delegation had a working discussion with Prof. Dr. Senay Yalcin, the President of the University.  The meeting was also attended by Prof. Dr. Elif Cepni, the Vice-President and the heads of departments.

The next leg of the MGO visit was to Bosnia-Herzegovina.  The inaugural event was held at Europe Hotel, Sarajevo, on 21 April 2015.  It was inaugurated by His Excellency Datuk Anuar Kasman, the Malaysian Ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina and was attended by officials from the Malaysian Embassy as well as alumni residing in that country.  The delegation went to visit several universities in there and among them was the International University of Sarajevo, where the delegation met and held discussions with Mr. Emir Hadzikadunic, the Secretary General, University of Sarajevo.  Also visited wad the Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar, where the delegation held discussions with Mr. Elvir Zlomusica, Vice Rector for Science and Research and Mrs Mirsad Behwam, the university’s International Liaison officer.  The last university visited was the University of Zenica and discussions with Prof. Cabaravdic Malik, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation Quality Assurance and several heads of department at the university were conducted.

The MGO tour of Europe has indeed achieved the set aims of exploring new frontiers and establishing new networks of cooperation with international higher learning institutions.  The program, which receives strong support from the Malaysian Ministry of Education, has created opportunities for Malaysian higher learning institutions, particularly UUM, to tap into these new markets and offer opportunities to students from Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina to study in this country.
